Pulaski Community Youth Center Lead Instructor Positions: Digital Arts, Technology & STEM

Are you passionate about Tech Education, Game Design, Digital Arts, Robotics, or STEM? Pulaski Community Youth Center, in conjunction with Black Rocket Productions, is seeking enthusiastic, motivated, and talented individuals to work as Lead Instructors to help teach exciting classes like Make Your First Video Game and YouTube Content Creators!

  • Fall Semester seasonal position 

  • In-room with kids ages 8-12

  • Comprehensive training!

  • No formal experience required

  • Spend the fall with our AMAZING students having fun with technology!

 

General Requirements:

  • Located within commuting distance of Radford, VA and have a reliable form of transportation

  • Experience with children in an educational setting preferred but not required 

  • Strong technology skills are preferred, such as 3D modeling, coding, game creation or design, animation, robotics, modifying games, video editing, competitive gaming, significant knowledge of Minecraft or Roblox, etc.

  • Available to complete online training in August and/or September (train at your own pace)

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to offer accommodations or work sponsorship

  • Must be available to teach in the classroom a minimum of 3 classes/week plus coach at least 2 Robotics Teams
  • *Please note - this job listing is for a program in the Pulaski Community Youth Center that would teach Black Rocket classes among several other roles. The Technology Teacher:
    • Provides oversight and program planning for the STEAM program
    • Must be organized and self-directed with a growth mindset
    • May participate in program growth and implementation

Role Requirements:

  • 21 years of age required

  • Associate’s Degree in Engineering or a related field completed or in progress. College seniors with experience with groups of kids are also encouraged to apply

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • CPR/First Aid Certification

  • State and national criminal and sex offender background check and TB test prior to employment

  • Ability to perform physical labor as needed for position

  • Working knowledge and/or ability to train on coding, robotics (Experience in First Robotics preferred)

  • Experience teaching kids is not required, but the ideal candidate will have some experience with kids in a formal or informal setting (classroom, volunteering, childcare, tutoring, coaching, etc.)

  • Ability to facilitate a class of up to 18 kids with in a technology setting

  • Semester stipend of $3500 and ~15 hours/week

Experience and Skills

Duties of our Instructors include, but are not limited to: 

  1. Prepare adequately by reviewing and internalizing the prepared curricula for the courses to be taught.

  2. Familiarize oneself with the necessary software in order to educate and utilize in the classroom.

  3. Implement the curriculum as written, adapting it as needed to improve the camper experience or accommodate individual campers.

  4. Provide leadership, energy and camp spirit, constantly assessing group dynamics and the needs of individual campers.

  5. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in and outside the classroom. 

  6. Establish a menu of STEAM classes for each semester to engage students of a variety of ages in Technology and Arts classes

  7. Manage enrollment and participate in growth and development of programs

  8. Ensure the safety of each child in the program through implementation of safety policies, emergency practices and health policies.

  9. Schedule and assist in marketing for STEAM programming

  10. Register and maintain participant data for programs

  11. Contribute to successful budget model for STEAM programs and supplies

  12. Accept and maintain responsibility on a daily basis for the ordered arrangement, appearance, décor, and cleanliness of the STEAM wing including hallways, restrooms, theater, classrooms and entry (may be done in collaboration with cleaning crew and partner Connections program)

  13. Communicate, collect and maintain fee schedule for participants

  14. Nurture positive relationships with parents and establish continual communication

  15. Other duties as assigned (additional responsibilities could be added with program growth)

Job Benefits

Semester stipend of $3500 

Work load will be ~15 hours/week
